Before the Surgery If you’re scheduled for general anesthesia, you want to avoid eating or drinking for eight hours before the surgery. You’ll also want to handle any finances with our office beforehand because you’ll probably be groggy afterward. Schedule a ride home for the same reason.
During the Surgery
Once you’re fully sedated, our dentist will remove your wisdom teeth. This usually involves cutting into the gum tissue around the tooth and separating the roots of the tooth from the jaw bone. If the tooth is too big to easily come out, they may cut the tooth into smaller pieces before extraction.
After the Surgery
Because you’ll be groggy and sleepy after the surgery, make sure you have a ride home. You’ll probably feel pain and swelling once the anesthesia wears off, so you can use painkillers and ice to help. We’ll provide gauze pads that you’ll need to change every hour or so as well.
The day after the surgery, you should rinse your mouth with saltwater each day. As for your diet, do not eat for a few hours after the surgery. After that, stick with liquids and soft foods for the first few days. Do not suck on anything or use a straw for a few days to prevent dry sockets.
